Sound analysis

Clockwork Orange (1971)

The director is suggesting that that the family is quite obnoxious, every chance they get they will start to argue and cause a commotion. The family is immature and violent as they start to fight in public. The director has used fast paced non diegetic sound such as a voice over as well as contrapuntal sound. The use of classical music played over a fight scene suggests that it is humorous and that things like this have happened before. It also suggests that their family is not taken seriously by many people because they seem to be very violent. The variation of pitch from high to low added a quite dramatic effect but also added tension to the scene, while the classical music calmed the viewers at the same time.

Funny Games (2001)

The director is suggesting that this family quite modern and accepting of all sorts of music. The use of diegetic sound was important because the characters dialogue was in another language which gave the audience a better understanding of where this family is from. The diegetic sound started off as classical music which unexpectedly turned into contrapuntal sound of loud fast paced rock/heavy metal music and the family remained calm throughout all of it as if they knew it was going t happen but the audience didn't. As the heavy metal sound bridged over to the part with the text on screen suggest that this music will be significant within the narrative, the family could possibly end up meeting a few rockstars and help them in some sort of way while on their trip.

Once Upon A Time In The West (1968)

Within this clip, there are many diegetic sounds for example the mans shoes clinking when he walks and the floor boards creaking as well as the chair suggesting that the wood is old and rusted. The water dropping on to the man's hat was emphasised as it was the only thing you could hear at that time and you could hear the loud splash of it. There were other sounds like the animals going by or the wind turbine moving. The sound of the fly was significant because it stopped at times suggesting what it's next move is. Once the sound of the fly become constant, it built up the tension and then finally the man caught the fly in the gun. The sound bridge of the train through the last scene suggest that it will be a significant part to the movie, there could be more scenes on the train or an aspect of it that will become a motif through the movie.

Once Upon A Time In America (1984)

In this clip, the director has used non-diegetic and diegetic sound.  Some examples of diegetic sound includes the dialogue at the beginning of the old man and then the sound of the other man giving the main character a massage. Some non-diegetic sound includes the phone ringing throughout the whole clip  and the noise at the party of all the people mingling. The loud sound of the phone ringing bridged over to all the scenes suggesting that this phone call is very important and could hold some information that could change the lively party situation to a tensed atmosphere. The sound of the phone as well as the fire trucks sound bridging over suggests that this could lead the narrative into solving the mystery of how this fire had started and who are these people who have died.

Withing this short clip of Stranger Things, there is diegetic sound of the female character breathing, this is significant as it is the only diegetic sound and focuses the attention of the viewers on to her breathing suggesting that she is could be frightened by the situation she is in. Also, the non diegetic sound of the tearing and the beating sound sort of like a heart beat of a living being again focuses the viewers attention on the sound because it was very loud and repetitive. These sounds are parallel to the clip because it suits the narrative but also contributes to the Sci-fi/Thriller show and creating an eerie and frightening ambience. The fact that there is no dialogue within this clip raises tension and creates suspense for the viewers which truly helps them focus on the silence of the atmosphere but also on the few sounds like the beating.
