Analysis on Psycho (1960)

Image
George Tomasini's editing turned Alfred Hitchcock's psychological thriller into a masterpiece receiving four Academy award nominations. This movie received abundant fame for the famous shower scene which was only 45 seconds long but included 78 different shots which were all done with extreme precision. This clip starts off with a medium close up of the women in her robe with the diegetic sound of the paper being flushed down the toilet suggesting that this women is going to take a shower because she removes her robe. Due to certain issues when Psycho was filmed, it was banned to show inappropriate content and therefore, Hitchcock carefully planned his shots avoiding to show anything that would cause trouble and worked around this issue by showing her stomach, hands and face at most times. As the women steps into the shower, the medium close up cuts away to an eyeline match of the shower head as if Hitchcock was showing us the female's perspective. The fact that the fir

Task 1 • Watch the extract from The Birds (1962), directed by Alfred Hitchcock. 1.Discuss how the director uses editing to build up suspense. 2.How did you feel at different points in the sequence?  What are the most tense moments and how is this achieved through the editing?  The director uses the transition 'cutting on action' as the female actress walks towards the bench and sits down. The shot cuts from a long shot to a medium close up in order to get a closer and different perspective on the character. The camera shots get closer and closer to the female as the shots keep cross cutting from the birds which amplifies the tension and suspense of the scene. Also, the smash cut of the women smoking to her looking at a single bird flying is an eyeline match because the cut follows what the female looks at. I think that as the camera gets closer to the female the duration of each shot gets shorter and the pace increases to build up the suspense. The fa

Blade Runner reviews

My Responses Blade Runner 2049 - a gigantic spectacle of pure hallucinatory craziness: I agree with some of the content in this article even though I didn't quite engage with the narrative. I found the film quite confusing probably because I haven't seen the first film, however the film was visually appealing. The editing and cinematography made the film entertaining and also I loved the though process behind some of the shots. For example, my favourite shots were of the water reflections on the walls and props because it was  aesthetically pleasing.  Blade Runner 2049 - a future classic: This article really talked about setting in depth and how it started off where the first film ended but had some excellent futuristic aspects. I agree with the fact that lighting was 'beautifully low-key' which contributed to the dark atmosphere and enhanced the lighting from the advertisements and holograms. I agree that the setting was very futuristic from the way the buildin

The opening scene starts off with an Ariel shot which establishes the location and gives an insight of the setting for the audience. There is also a medium close up of grave stones that connote death and suggests that there will be many deaths seen through the entire series. The extreme close ups of the females hair and the males hands suggest to the audience that they are going on a trip in the summer and have a nice time together. The close ups of the females hand and shoes suggest to the audience that she is of high class and is wealthy because she is wearing a white glove and red shoes. The red shoes connote love but also power and fierceness. The low angle shot of the birds is the turning point where the weather turns gloomy and birds are flying about suggesting that something has gone wrong. The zoomed in shot of the female sitting soaked clearly suggests that she is frightened and the close up enhances the her facial expressions and the fear within her face. Here are fo

Moonlight film review

Discussion points : Chiron is a character of few words. Why is this? How do the three  actors use body language to communicate Chiron’s emotions to the  audience? Why is he reluctant to make eye contact with people? Chiron is a character of a few words because the situations he has grown up in has made him become quite  suppressed. Chiron's mother was a drug addict which meant that when she didn't get her drugs or she didn't have money she would be aggressive towards her son. This made Chiron feel unwanted and scared because his mother would call swear at him and he couldn't do anything about it. Despite the fact that all three actors had to present Chiron as a shy character, the small amount of eye contact he made conveyed a lot of emotions. For example, the audience could see his love but uncertainty towards the people around him especially his best friend and mother.  Did anything about the Miami setting surprise you, compared to  its party image in popu

Here, I have created a video exploring different camera shots and angles. Some of the shots I looked at include: close up, establishing shot and extreme close ups. For the use of sound, I had to use the same audio for my transformation video because the audio I needed was not downloading. In future I will explore more shots and angles as well as effects. I need to re-upload the video because this is not the final version and the video continues on longer than it should.

Media Award tasks

Out of Mind  In my opinion, 'Out of Mind' had a really good narrative about a girl who was trapped in an unknown bubble, this made it very intriguing for the audience as both the character and audience were unaware of her surroundings. The actress was a really good performer and stayed in character throughout the whole film which was significant because she didn't lose her focus whilst filming. There was use of many different shots and scenes helped keep the audiences attention instead of them feeling bored just staring at one lengthy shot. The fact that the video started at the hospital gave the audience an insight as to what has already happened or what will happen next. Earthquake I really enjoyed watching this music video as it was very captivating and the music was well complimented by the editing. The cinematography was very good because there was a variety of shots and angles used to create this video, for example, high to low angle shots or having a handhe

Parallel and Contrapuntal sound video

I have used pictures and images that connote love, warmth, friendship and family which are parallel to the song filled with emotions. However, in order to show contrapuntal aspect, i have used videos and images that show a sense of aggression, violence, rage and abuse. I figured that showing the themes 'love' and 'hate' within this slow and romantic themed music would make it easier to find parallel and contrapuntal videos and images because they fit together.
