Editing classwork

Task 1
Watch the extract from The Birds (1962), directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
1.Discuss how the director uses editing to build up suspense.

2.How did you feel at different points in the sequence?  What are the most tense moments
and how is this achieved through the editing?
The director uses the transition 'cutting on action' as the female actress walks towards the bench and sits down. The shot cuts from a long shot to a medium close up in order to get a closer and different perspective on the character. The camera shots get closer and closer to the female as the shots keep cross cutting from the birds which amplifies the tension and suspense of the scene. Also, the smash cut of the women smoking to her looking at a single bird flying is an eyeline match because the cut follows what the female looks at. I think that as the camera gets closer to the female the duration of each shot gets shorter and the pace increases to build up the suspense. The fact that the slow pace of the shots where the women keeps looking to the side and back shows that she is feeling a bit uncomfortable and is suspicious of what is going on behind her. The cross cutting pace increases nearer to the end where she follows the bird to finally see what is behind her and notice that there is an unusual amount of birds suggesting that something unfortunate may take place. The constant cut away from the women to the birds whilst she is running is one of the most tensing moments within the clips.
Task 2
Watch the extract from City of God (2002), directed by Fernando Meirelles.

1.Note down how the pace of editing varies throughout the sequence and discuss what
effect this has.

2.How does the editing combine with other aspects of film language to convey meaning?

Throughout the beginning, the short clips of the knife being sharpened followed by the fade
to a black screen is significant because it causes the audience to think what will they see
after each fade and if it will be the same thing they saw as before or not. The pace
increases as the with the short clips of the knife which keeps the audience engaged
because they are seeing several things from the cross cutting to different shots of the
chickens and vegetables being cut. The cut away to the chicken creates the enigma code of
what will happen to the chicken, the tension increases as the cross cutting from the chicken
to the knife back and forth suggests to the audience that the chicken is going to die. The
interesting spinning effect at the end showed passing of time but into the future, the
producer wanted to make the audience think that he was looking into his past.
