Funding

1) What was the budget for Chicken?

The budget for Chicken was £110,000. 

2) How did Joe Stephenson end up raising the money to make the film?

In order to make the film, he raised the money through investments by friends and contacts. The BFI Film fund wasn't willing to fund Chicken.

3) How does the Chicken budget compare to a Hollywood-funded British blockbuster such as Spectre or Paddington 2?

Chicken is an example of a micro budget film which means it is a very low budget film where as Paddington and Spectre have a huge budget compared to Chicken.

4) Joe Stephenson tried to secure funding from organisations that help low-budget filmmakers. What is the BFI Film Fund and how does it contribute to the British film industry?

The British Film Industry uses National lottery funds to develop and support original UK filmmakers and films, and to increase the audiences who can enjoy them.

5) Why do you think Chicken failed to secure funding from the BFI Film Fund?

Chicken raises questions around the role and future of national cinema as well as the viability of media products outside of the mainstream for niche audiences. The film focuses on some controversial topics and the BFI would assume that because of that the film wouldn't be a success and therefore chose not to fund Chicken.

Production

1) What difficulties did the film run into during production?

Since Stephenson was filming in locations he was unfamiliar with, he didn't know what the weather was like and it was essential for him to get the filming done within 19 days.

2) How many days did the film take to shoot?

It took 19 days to film Chicken.

3) What scenes were particularly difficult for Joe Stephenson to film?

The most difficult scenes to film were outside scenes such as on the farm or in the forests because it could have rained and there could have been issues with lighting.

Distribution

1) Why did the film fail to secure a distribution deal when first made in 2014?

There was no distribution deal secured in 2014 possibly because people thought the film had no potential and wouldn't generate a lot of revenues.

2) What film festivals did Chicken feature at between 2014-2016?

Chicken was apart of the two year festival circuit and won awards which generated interest and acclaim for the film. Chicken featured at the International film festival- festival awards included were Edinburgh, Busan, New Hampshire, Palm Beach and Julien.

3) Why are film festivals an effective way for a low-budget film to secure a distribution deal?

Film festivals help promote the film but also help the film become recognised amongst a larger audience and critics. At film festivals, the low budget films have a chance of winning awards.

4) When was Chicken released in cinemas in the UK?

Chicken was realeased in May 2016 in UK cinemas.

5) Why do you think film subscription service MUBI chose the film to feature on the service?

MUBI features films that have niche audiences and that are original. They hand pick films fresh films from festivals to forgotten gems. 

6) Why was Film4 a good choice to give the film its UK television premiere?

Film4 would help the film reach it's British audience and will generate money for the producer as well as promoting it. 

7) When will the film be released on iTunes and other video-on-demand services in the USA and Canada?

The film will be released on iTunes and other video on demand services in January 2018.

Promotion

1) What does the trailer suggest regarding genre and the potential audience pleasures of Chicken?

The trailer suggests that this film is packed with a lot of drama and action (violence) scenes as well as a lot of emotion.

2) What synergy can you find between the trailer and other traditional marketing methods such as the film poster?

They both present reviews and quotes from critics as well as the award titles they have received and have been nominated for. The image used for the film poster is taken from the trailer which suggests the importance of the moment the image was taken from.

3) Why are reviews from industry figures such as Mark Kermode so important to a film's success?

Mark Kermode is a well know critic and if he gives a positive review for a film, people will assume that the film is worth watching.

4) How does the Chicken Twitter account create and maintain interest in the film?

The Twitter account is updated in ordered to keep people informed but also there are verified figures who have re-tweeted and promoted the film as well as Variety.

5) Who does the Twitter account re-tweet? How does this help to promote the film?

As I mentioned before, the account re-tweets from verified figures such as Chris Colfer or Florence Pugh which widens their audience.

6) How does the Chicken Facebook page use images and video content to promote the film?

The account has the Chicken film poster as it's display picture so people are aware of what they are talking about. Also, the account has posted the trailer and many other pictures of reviews and images of the cast which promotes the film because people would know that this film is praised by certain magazines and critics.

7) What pages are liked by the Chicken Facebook page? What does this tell you about the film and potential target audience?

The account has liked the page 'Little White Lies' which is an internationally distributed movie magazine that is published by a London based media company who also publishes the DIY culture magazine Huck. 

8) Go to the B Good Picture Company's website page for Chicken. What celebrities are mentioned on the page? Why might they be highlighted?

The celebrities that are mentioned include: Stephen Fears, Noel Clarke, Karen Gillian and Mark Kermode who are critics that have reviewed Chicken and given it a really positive review.

9) Now go to the film's official website. What is the key purpose of the website and what does this tell you about the influence of new technology and how it is changing how people watch films?

The website mentions all the platforms the film is available on in order to attract different age group and people because not all people will go to cinemas. A lot of people will just watch the film at home on demand or on streaming services.

10) Go to the B Good Picture Company YouTube channel. What videos feature on the channel? How do they help to promote Chicken?

The videos feature the main character played by Scott Chambers but also features a video about him being interviewed by Ian Mckellan who is an English actor that is the recipient of six Lawrence Olivier awards, a Tony award, a Golden Globe, a Screen actors Guild award, a BIF award and many more awards.
