The impact of new/digital media on TV

Go to our Media Magazine archive and read the article on Netflix and the Cultural Industries(MM63 - page 45). Create a blogpost called 'The impact of new/digital media on TV' and answer the following questions:

1) What does the 'industry' concept in A Level Media Studies refer to?

This is the most neglected area of media studies. The 'Industry' concept refers to the companies that create and distribute media texts, the standard practices of media production, as well as the regulatory and legal frameworks in which companies operate.

2) What does David Hesmondhalgh argue with regards to how the creative industries have changed since the 1980s?

He argues that there has been a significant shift in cultural production since the 1980's.

3) Choose the three most significant points Hesmondhalgh makes regarding the changing cultural industries. Why are these the most significant in your view?

- Globalisation has meant media texts can circulate more easily across borders reducing North American dominance

- Digitisation has allowed the technology sector to compete directly with traditional media    companies

- There has been an increase in media
corporations owning companies in different sectors of the industry

I think these are significant because it shows how larger media corporations have gained more control by owning different companies in several sectors and how globalisation has increased the amount of media consumers.

4) What is technological convergence?

The growth of home computing and the creation of the World Wide Web led to increased technological convergence. It is the combining of different technologies for example taking pictures on a phone which combines the functionality of a camera and a telephone.

5) How are technology companies challenging traditional broadcasters in the TV industry?

Google and Facebook started as technology companies but they have avoided being regulated as media companies as they would be responsible for what is hosted on their sites. For example, Google's YouTube hosts extremist content but if traditional broadcasters aired similar content they would be fined or possibly lose their license.

Amazon (originally an online book seller) is now producing its own TV programmes. It followed Netflix that used to be a DVD postal service in 'liberating' TV programmes from broadcasters. Netflix produces it's own shows and content because traditional media companies would realise they could set up their own internet distribution networks.
6) What budgets will Netflix, Amazon and Apple spend on original programming next year?

- Netflix plans to spend $8 billion on original content

- Amazon plans to spend $4.5 billion

- Apple will spend $1 billion
7) How many countries are Netflix and Amazon available in?

In 2016, Netflix launched it's service in 130 new countries making it now a total of 190 countries. Amazon opened in 200 countries.
8) The global nature of modern television means producers are having to consider international audiences when creating content. What example from Netflix does the article use to explain this?

Producers have to make sure that their productions can be understood widely by diverse audiences. The example is the monster in Stranger Things, which was named 'Demogorgon' after a Dungeons and Dragons demon prince. Netflix's team researched into D&D how various cultures translated 'Demogorgon' in the mid 1970's. In some parts of the world, it was renamed and they tried to use actors that regularly perform in foreign language shows.

9) Do you think technology companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon will increase their interest in the television industry?

Yes, I think their interest in the television industry will increase because they would want to maximise the amount of revenue and profit they get as well as expanding their platforms in order to reach the largest consumer audience.
10) How do changes in technology influence the creation of TV dramas such as Capital or Deutschland 83? How?

Changes in technology allow people around the world to access different media texts, people enjoy foreign TV dramas more like Deutschland 83. Also, people around the world are able to learn more about the different cultures through technology for example people become more aware about the financial crisis that took place in 2007-8 in London and how property prices increased rapidly.
