Coursework: Research and Planning

1) State the genre you have chosen - horror or coming of age drama.

Coming of age drama

2) Choose at least five films in your selected genre and watch the trailer and one scene from each film. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene.

Bend It Like Beckham

  • In terms of camerawork there are a lot of panning, medium and close up shots which are very quick with a lot of dialogue and action.
  • In terms of editing there is a lot of shots which is creating a montage of the life of the girl who is trying to play football and family problems are being caused.
  • In terms of mise-en-scene the family is wearing their traditional Indian suits and the other characters are wearing sports clothes or casual clothes.
  • In terms of sound, there is some traditional Indian music being played and there is some calm music being played in the background..
Lady Bird Trailer
  • Plot: Depicts the relationship between a mother and daughter and how despite their differences, they're actually quite similar.
  • Technical Analysis - Extended scene at the beginning of the trailer, lots of wide shots to establish the setting.

Juno:
  • Plot - Teen becomes pregnant and decides to put the baby up for adoption - but when the adoption father views her as more than the mother of his future child, things get complicated.
  • Technical analysis of scene - Establishing shot of house, wide shots establish the setting (high school), 180 degree rule whilst the two characters are talking
  • Music - Beginning of scene has upbeat music, fades when the two characters start talking and stops when the conversation becomes serious, starts up again when dialogue stops.

Clueless:
  • Plot - Rich young girl (Cher) sees herself as a matchmaker, first she matches two teachers and then decides to give a new girl a makeover.
  • Technical analysis of trailer - First 36 seconds is an extended scene, one more shorter extended scene towards the middle of the trailer.
  • Mise-en-scene - Very iconic, 90s costume which highlights the time period
  • Music - The same soundtrack throughout but fades whenever there's dialogue.

3) Write a 250 word statement of intent for your film scene. This should follow AQA's guidance (look in your coursework booklet) and clearly lay out how you will use media language to meet your brief. You should also discuss what representations you plan to create (either reinforcing or challenging stereotypes) and how your scene would appeal to an audience.

Statement of Intent:

My aim is to tell a story about a stereotypical teenage Asian girl and her struggles to maintain her parents’ wishes whilst trying to come to terms with her own desires. Subsequently she chooses a destructive route. The story will show the journey for the teenager and how she will mature and face her problems. The main character is a 17-year-old girl originating from an orthodox Asian family. Her outside persona is of a good daughter following her parents’ wishes of a good education. Although she pulls off a good front, she struggles internally with the pressure to keep up the good grades, which has lead her to a double life in which she abuses drugs, that challenges the stereotypical view of an asian girl, who would be well cultured, reserved, conservative and focused on her studies. Her best friend will be the light in her darkness and will guide her back on the right path. The main characters being teenagers will appeal to a large portion of the teenage mass and young adults. However due to there being the use of drugs it may have an age restriction.

4) Write a script for your film scene. You'll find guidance for writing a script in the BBC Writers' Room (click on the Script Library to read real examples of professional scripts).

5) Storyboard at least five key shots from your scene, take a photo of the storyboard and upload it to your blogpost. What visual style are you trying to create? Storyboard sheets are available in DF07.

6) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing. These additional shots are often close-ups, cutaways, alternative angles or similar. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word to set out your shot list - you can find an example here
