updated statement of intent 25/4/19

Statement of Intent:
My aim is to tell a story about a stereotypical teenage Asian girl who struggles to believe that her best friend has passed away which will be conveyed through a film trailer and three film posters. My trailer will show the journey of how two best friends enjoy their time together until the equilibrium is disrupted by one of the girls dying in a car accident. The story from then will show how the main character struggles to cope with the pain and loss of her best friend and resorts to consuming alcohol and taking drugs. The alcohol and drugs help suppress her feelings, however, even after her friend’s death, she continues to see her best friend around as if she were alive. The protagonist taking this dramatic step will lead to the new equilibrium where her best friend (the Hero, Propp’s) will help the protagonist (the princess, Propp’s) and stop her from taking drugs/alcohol and help her get closure.

My trailer will show flashbacks in black and white at the beginning of the trailer in order to show the memories that the two best friends have shared together. The trailer will then go on to show how the best friend died using fast paced editing to create tension but throughout the trailer, the majority of editing will be slow paced at normal speed because I would like to capture the realism of the moments. Within my trailer, I will be using a slow paced song that eventually has a pick up that I can use during tensed/ emotional moments of my trailer. I will also have dialogue between the main character and her best friend as the trailer is from the main characters point of view.

The main character is a 17-year-old girl originating from an orthodox Asian familyAndy Medhurst suggests stereotyping is shorthand for identification. This means we use stereotypes to tell the audiences a lot in a short space of time but can carry value judgements and therefore be negative, for example, the representation of a teenage Asian girl.   The protagonist’s outside persona is of a good daughter following her parents’ wishes of a good education and practising religion. However, she struggles with the pain and loss of her best friend which forces her to challenge the stereotypical view of an Asian girl, who would be well cultured, reserved, and conservative and focused on her studies as she drinks alcohol and takes drugs.

The main characters being teenagers (17-18) will appeal to a large portion of the teenage mass and young adults. However there maybe use of alcohol and drugs that may not be suitable for a younger audience and therefore may have a age restriction of 15. I think my film will be aimed at more females than males (70% female/30%male) because the main character is a female and she is telling her story. My audience would have enjoyed films like Bend it Like Beckham that tells a story of a teenage Asian girl who struggles to fulfil her desires as it may not seem right in the eyes of her orthodox parents. By featuring students within the school atmosphere, it will intrigue a young audience who studies in High school or sixth form and would be able to relate to the characters (Blumler&Katz, personal identity). The audience pleasures offered would be surveillance because the audience are learning what Asian orthodox parents are like but also personal relationship is offered as some viewers may be Asian and would understand the struggle of having Asian parents.

My film posters would be up in public places such as the bus stop, on the bus or in shopping centres where it is easily view able. The film poser and snippets of the trailer would be available on digital media, for example, ads on websites, but they would also have their own social media pages on Instagram and Snapchat as well as YouTube. These social media pages are ideal as my actors can interact with the audience and post competitions which will generate more of a buzz for my film.  My film will be produced by B Good Picture Company that is set up by the director Joe Stephenson who has produced the low budget, coming of age drama ‘Chicken, 2014’ and my film will be funded by the BFI Film fund which funds low budget British films.
