George Tomasini's editing turned Alfred Hitchcock's psychological thriller into a masterpiece receiving four Academy award nominations. This movie received abundant fame for the famous shower scene which was only 45 seconds long but included 78 different shots which were all done with extreme precision. This clip starts off with a medium close up of the women in her robe with the diegetic sound of the paper being flushed down the toilet suggesting that this women is going to take a shower because she removes her robe. Due to certain issues when Psycho was filmed, it was banned to show inappropriate content and therefore, Hitchcock carefully planned his shots avoiding to show anything that would cause trouble and worked around this issue by showing her stomach, hands and face at most times. Task 1 • Watch the extract from The Birds (1962), directed by Alfred Hitchcock. 1.Discuss how the director uses editing to build up suspense. 2.How did you feel at different points in the sequence?  What are the most tense moments and how is this achieved through the editing?  The director uses the transition 'cutting on action' as the female actress walks towards the bench and sits down. The shot cuts from a long shot to a medium close up in order to get a closer and different perspective on the character. The camera shots get closer and closer to the female as the shots keep cross cutting from the birds which amplifies the tension and suspense of the scene. Also, the smash cut of the women smoking to her looking at a single bird flying is an eyeline match because the cut follows what the female looks at. My Responses Blade Runner 2049 - a gigantic spectacle of pure hallucinatory craziness: I agree with some of the content in this article even though I didn't quite engage with the narrative. I found the film quite confusing probably because I haven't seen the first film, however the film was visually appealing. The editing and cinematography made the film entertaining and also I loved the though process behind some of the shots. The opening scene starts off with an Ariel shot which establishes the location and gives an insight of the setting for the audience. There is also a medium close up of grave stones that connote death and suggests that there will be many deaths seen through the entire series. The extreme close ups of the females hair and the males hands suggest to the audience that they are going on a trip in the summer and have a nice time together. The close ups of the females hand and shoes suggest to the audience that she is of high class and is wealthy because she is wearing a white glove and red shoes. The red shoes connote love but also power and fierceness. The low angle shot of the birds is the turning point where the weather turns gloomy and birds are flying about suggesting that something has gone wrong. Discussion points : Chiron is a character of few words. Why is this? How do the three  actors use body language to communicate Chiron’s emotions to the  audience? Why is he reluctant to make eye contact with people? Chiron is a character of a few words because the situations he has grown up in has made him become quite  suppressed. Chiron's mother was a drug addict which meant that when she didn't get her drugs or she didn't have money she would be aggressive towards her son. This made Chiron feel unwanted and scared because his mother would call swear at him and he couldn't do anything about it. Despite the fact that all three actors had to present Chiron as a shy character, the small amount of eye contact he made conveyed a lot of emotions.
